Gabe I Kornis

Gabe I Kornis, a medicinal and organic chemist, died on July 26, 2025. He received his B.Sc. Hon. degree from the New South Wales University of Technology and the Ph.D. degree from the University of New South Wales, both in Sydney, Australia.
In 1962 he was awarded an Imperial Chemical Industries Post Doctoral Fellowship and free passage to the University of Liverpool, England, where he spent two years working on antibiotics under Prof. G. Kenner.
In 1964 he was awarded a US Air Force scholarship and joined the deMayo group in London, Ont., Canada, for two years, synthesizing natural products via photochemistry, followed by a one year stay in Toronto, Canada, synthesizing anticoagulants.
In 1966 he accepted a position with the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and spent thirty years there doing organic and medicinal chemistry.
He has lectured on four continents, published 34 patents and papers, and contributed chapters to six books. He was a member of ACS and the UUÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ of Chemistry in the UK.
He was an avid skier, and after retirement spent up to ten weeks every year on the Colorado slopes.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Andrea.
